April 6 2008 - The Mumford Fire Dept. needed assistance from several companies this afternoon to control a large brush fire at 1806
Riga Mumford Road. The call was received for a large tree on fire 50' from a residence in a rural, non hydranted district. "Automatic
mutual aid was critical in stopping the fire from reaching a stand of trees bordering the field" said Mumford Chief Jason Klein. Multiple
companies responded with tankers and brush trucks. Fourth Battalion Fire Coordinator Gary Johnson estimates about 10 acres of
vegetation was consumed by the fire. Churchville Chief Tom Hetherington says "although the ground is wet, the brush on top is dry",
which creates a good conditions for fire. Chief Klein also says it (brush fire) is "manpower intensive, and starting a lot of people early paid
off in the end". A total of nine companies including Caledonia, Scottsville, Clifton, and Churchville operated at the scene with Henrietta,
LeRoy, Chili, and York provided fill-ins, as well as the NY State Police helicopter flew over. For more information, visit:
