Churchville Fire Department has purchased 19 acres located on Route 36 (Washington Street)
just North of the corner of Rt. 36 and Rt. 33 (East Buffalo Street).  The parcel of land runs behind the
Riga town hall and the American Legion post.  The  building committee recently gave a PowerPoint
presentation highlighting the progress they have made.

UPDATE 11/3/2006:  There is now a large sign located on the property to designate the proposed location of
the new firehouse and ask for the community's support in funding the project.  Be sure to look for it on your
next trip down Washington Rd.

(Must have Microsoft PowerPoint to view - this is a LARGE file and may take time to download).

General New Firehouse Information
During the train derailment incident on February 25, it became clear that the current firehouse is woefully
inadequate when it comes to parking during a large-scale incident.  Specifically, when assistance vehicles
arrived from the county (such as the Monroe County Haz-Mat team) and other districts, there was insufficient
space at the firehouse to properly and efficiently stage the vehicles.  These photos illustrate the problem with
parking congestion during that incident.

February 2009 - Construction is moving along despite the weather, with much of the
brickwork outside complete and the training facility nearly completely erected.
December 2008 - The steel frame has been erected and the facing blocks are
beginning to be put in place as weather allows so the sheet steel can go up and the
building can be enclosed as soon as possible.
